ANNEX is a collaboration of artists, architects, and urban researchers who came together to curate the Irish Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2021. Members include Sven Anderson, Alan Butler, David Capener, Donal Lally, Clare Lyster, and Fiona McDermott. Their work argues that the digital is material. That it connects bodies, thermal flow, matter, and the environment, exposing the romantic metaphor of the cloud by looking at data infrastructure: it’s materiality, the spaces it produces, and the vast ecological footprint it creates. Annex’s ongoing research explores the material and cultural implications of large technical systems for the built environment with reference to architecture, art, computer science, and gaming platforms, and draws attention to some of the extraordinary transformations and profound contradictions being brought about by information technologies, decoded from the lens of Ireland’s significant role in telecommunications.
The Architectural Association of Ireland is a non-profit voluntary organisation, founded in 1896 'to promote and afford facilities for the study of Architecture and the Allied Sciences & Arts while providing a medium of friendly communication between the Members and others interested in the progress of Architecture'.
