A two-day conference at NCAD exploring how art schools, museums and cultural institutions can become sites of ecological reworlding.
Becoming Terrestrial is a two-day international conference on outdoor ecological and experiential learning sites connected to museums, cultural institutions, schools, community spaces and third-level campuses.
Situated at the intersection of art, design, education and environmental thought and action, the conference considers how such sites operate as a “third space”. These sites are ecological infrastructures, and also settings where knowledge is produced, shared and contested, and where conventional boundaries between art and everyday life, aesthetics and utility, and expertise and lived experience are unsettled. Contributors address questions of participation, care, maintenance, temporality and the politics of sustainability, and the ways such sites might help institutions reworld, think otherwise and work towards liveable futures.
The conference builds on research and pedagogical development at NCAD FIELD, an ecological learning site at the centre of the College’s inner-city campus since 2020.
