‘Coming to the Table’ is a ceramic installation work, comprising of 15 photo-printed plates. The use of the dinner plate metaphorically connects us with the notion of a dinner table as a place to gather. Also more subtly it alludes to Northern Ireland’s history of coming to the table to power share. To create this artwork, the artist spent 2 years journeying throughout Northern Ireland, photographing over 100 Modernist church buildings. The tradition of the ‘souvenir plate’ is brought to mind, as an object associated with travel and as a token of remembrance. The work explores the ideals behind Modernist style churches, to be open and progressive spaces, that aspired to move past the region’s histories of division.

Sylvia Grace Borda is a Canadian born British artist currently living in Vancouver, who has shown her work widely nationally and internationally. This year she presented new climate focused work at the 61st Venice Biennale.

This work will feature in ‘Objects & Innovations’, a new ACNI Collection exhibition as part of @augustcraftmonth26 at the @downartscentre1, running to Friday 28th August.
