Milk Wilson's essay ‘We that Swarm Among the Living and the Dead’ was commissioned for A L T A R and read on a wild stormy night in Goldenbridge Cemetery. Mick returns to interrogate the spatial segregation between the communities of the living and those of the dead. Presenting the body as both a living ensemble of self and not-self, Mick’s essay reflects on the uncanny realization of the self as multitude and asks what does a recognition of our immanent movement towards the crowd of the dead imply?
A L T A R publication is realised and edited by Clodagh Emoe and Donal Lally, and designed by Alex Synge, working under the studio name The First 47. A L T A R features photographs by Kate-Bowe O’Brien and David Conway and film stills by artist/filmmaker Jenny Brady and Barry Lynch. A L T A R was funded by the Arts Council of Ireland, Architecture Project Award in 2022 and supported by Common Ground, Dublin Cemeteries Trust, IMMA, NCAD and TU Dublin
