We at the UCC planning school are delighted to join with the Irish Planning Institute to host an important public lecture and debate about housing, planning and construction in Ireland.
Delivered by Dr. Nicholas Mansergh, the lecture follows publication of his recent book ‘The Irish Construction Cycle 1970 – 2023: Policies and escape routes’ (Eastwood, 2024). A respected figure in Irish planning circles, Nicholas Mansergh has shaped a number of important planning initiatives over his long career (including the influential Cork Land Use and Transportation Study and others). Here he takes a cold and forensic look at the intrinsic nature of planning and the construction cycle, encourages us to shift our understanding of how things really work and presents a mature approach to how deep systemic challenges can be addressed.
Responses to the lecture will be given by Mr. Michael O’Flynn CEO of the O’Flynn Group and a prominent commentator on construction and development in Ireland and by Professor Cathal O’Connell, who has a long track record of research and publication on housing and social policy.
Location: Aula Maxima, 60 College Road T12 K5W7 Cork
