Facilitated by Louise Cullen (BBC NI Agriculture and Environment Correspondent)

Nicholas Boys Smith will be talking about Create Streets’s research work into the relationships between place with human outcomes. He will also discuss Create Streets’s practical work for councils, landowners, neighbourhood groups and developers into regenerative development and the importance of sustainable paces not just sustainable buildings. Where are people happy? Why? Where are people healthy? What supports local prosperity? What types of place enable us to tread more lightly upon the planet? How can councils enable change and not, futilely, get stuck trying to do everything themselves? How do you “engage wide” and “engage deep” without spending a fortune? How do you work round “culture wars” on cars and parking and instead build consensus about place and neighbourliness? Nicholas will discuss his work in the UK and abroad and his work with the UK Government on English planning and place policy. What are the implications for the present and future of Belfast? And how can we take people with us to a city which is bigger, better and more beautiful?
