New Life, Old Buildings is IAF’s national programme about the future of buildings that are already built. This year New Life, Old Buildings takes place in Limerick on 11 and 18 September and online on 23 and 24 October.

Day 1 - If These Walls Could Talk
Thursday 11 September, 12:30-8pm
Wickham Way, Limerick

You are welcome to join for the whole day or attend any activity that interests you. All events are free but must be booked in advance.

1. Walking tour | Never Look Back, 12:30pm
The first day of events will kick off with a guided walking tour of Limerick city centre, inspired by EVA’s Never Look Back archive.

2. Open table discussion | Places for Arts and Culture, 2pm
This is an opportunity for community members, artists, and professionals to share specific spatial needs, discuss challenges, and explore the possibilities of transforming vacant buildings into functional spaces for arts and culture. Take a seat at the table to listen and share your perspective.

3. Site visits, 4pm
This is an opportunity to visit 2 buildings in different stages of renovation. The visits are led by the managers of the sites, who will provide a tour of the space and share their experiences.

4. Panel discussion | From Rubble to Regret: The Consequences of Demolition, 6:30pm
This panel will delve into the broader implications of demolition and how the current systems facilitate a culture of demolish and replace. The presentations will explore the environmental, cultural and social costs of demolition, followed by a panel discussion and Q&A from the audience.

New Life, Old Buildings continues in Limerick on 18 September and online on 23 and 24 October.

Irish Architecture Foundation

About With a focus on public audiences and established in 2005, the Irish Architecture Foundation (IAF) is Ireland’s independent organisation that fosters and advances the culture and communication of architecture. Based in Dublin, but with a national remit and an international network, our purpose is to empower people to build a better world. A not-for-profit charity, the IAF is principally funded by the Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon. It is additionally funded by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, under the auspices of the National Built Heritage Services; the Office of Public Works; and Dublin City Council. Across an increasingly broad range of events, programmes, and exhibitions, the IAF partners with individuals, organisations, government agencies, education institutions and civil society groups to ensure that our work builds civic pride and action and that outcomes are impactful and transformative.
