Roscommon County Council invites submissions from artists for one sculptural 'Sculpture-on-the-Square' artwork to be mounted on a polished concrete plinth on the newly developed square in Roscommon Town. The ‘Sculpture on the Square’ is to be a contemporary feature, drawing in passers-by and engaging them to explore Roscommon Town and its many assets.
The Sculpture on the Square commission is part of the final elements of the Roscommon Town Main Street and Market Square Public Realm Project funded under the 2018 Urban Regeneration and Development Fund (URDF) and Roscommon County Council regeneration team working with GKMP Architects, artist Rhona Byrne, and a multidisciplinary team appointed to implement the Innovative Architectural and Artistically Influenced Covered Civic Space in Roscommon Town Centre.
This commission is intended to provide opportunities for dialogue and participation with the local community. Community representatives will be included in the assessment panel. As part of a two-stage competition, artists will be required to provide a detailed project proposal including concept visuals, methodology, technical information, time frame and budget breakdown. After assessment, a site visit will be arranged. Successful artist(s) will engage with GKMP consultant architects, consultant artist Rhona Byrne, and Roscommon County Council Regeneration Team and Arts Office to finalise the design output and installation on the polished concrete plinth.
COMMISSION BUDGET: €49,000
SUBMISSION DEADLINE: Wednesday 4pm, 23rd August 2023
For submission and queries contact Mary Smyth via msmyth@roscommoncoco.ie.
The Sculpture on the Square is a two stage application process. Stage 1: open call for expression of interests. A selection panel will shortlist up to 3 artists who will be invited to further develop their proposals at Stage 2. A proposal development fee of €300 will be paid to shortlisted artists.
