The National Built Heritage Service and Waterford City and County Council are hosting Sense of Place, a symposium on the heritage-led regeneration of Irish towns, in the Medieval Museum, Waterford, on Wednesday and Thursday 4th and 5th June 2025. The Medieval Museum will provide the ideal setting for a symposium exploring the topic of historic urban landscapes, their conservation and management as the basis renewal and revitalisation.
Day One of Sense of Place will include a walking tour of Waterford, Ireland’s oldest city, and, led by the Architects and Architectural Conservation Officer from Waterford City and County Council, will stop by completed and ongoing urban regeneration projects to show how the council have collaborated with key stakeholders to unlock the potential of the historic city centre for the benefit of all.
Day Two of Sense of Place will focus on the revitalisation of historic urban centres throughout Ireland and, following a keynote presentation by Gráinne Shaffrey marking the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of The Irish Town – An Approach to Survival by Patrick and Maura Shaffrey, the first session will include presentations on the conservation-led repair and heritage-led regeneration of historic sites in Dún Laoghaire and Limerick. The second session will focus on the new methodology devised by the UCD School of Architecture, Planning and Environmental Policy for urban landscape character assessment.
Location: Medieval Museum, Cathedral Square, The Viking Triangle, Waterford, X91 K10E
