Explore North Belfast’s heritage through philanthropy, social reform, Clifton House, and the revitalised Redeemer Central

Using historic buildings to tell the story of North Belfast’s rich history – its industrial might, religious traditions and social change – the North Belfast Heritage Cluster, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Belfast Charitable Society, supports heritage-led regeneration and public engagement. This walking tour will explore themes of philanthropy and social reform, visiting sites that reflect the city’s long tradition of charitable endeavour and civic pride. Among them are Clifton House, home to Belfast’s oldest charity and associated with reformers Mary Ann McCracken and Martha McTier, and Redeemer Central, an historic church building now being revitalised as a renewed centre for worship, community and civic engagement, and Redeemer Central, an historic church building now being revitalised as a renewed centre for worship, community and civic engagement

The tour will begin with an introductory visit to Clifton House, before continuing into Clifton Street Cemetery, where the stories of prominent philanthropists and industrialists connected to Belfast’s civic and charitable history will be explored. The walk will conclude with a visit to Redeemer Central, further highlighting the area’s evolving social and community landscape.
