Frederick Hervey, the ‘Earl Bishop’, was one of the most extraordinary characters of the eighteenth century. In this talk, Peter Fox, who has recently published an edition of the Earl Bishop’s correspondence, will discuss the Bishop’s passion for building in his diocese of Derry, especially his two grand houses, Downhill and Ballyscullion, as seen through the prism of his letters and those of his architects.
