Running 12 April- 21 May at Uillinn: West Cork Arts Centre, Skibbereen, as the final stop in a national tour across Ireland in 2024 and 2025, The Reason of Towns is an engaging and ambitious exhibition of the work of one of Ireland’s most renowned architects, Valerie Mulvin.

Curated, commissioned, and produced by the Irish Architecture Foundation, this touring exhibition features models, drawings, texts, slides, notes, personal memorabilia, building fragments, and three specially commissioned films. Together these reflect just a fraction of three decades of work on the subject of towns by Mulvin and her practice, McCullough Mulvin Architects.

On national tour since August 2024, in each location The Reason of Towns acts as a public occasion to tell and retell true stories, lost traditions and possible futures for Irish towns and the people who live in them, fostering civic pride and promoting local action.

The self-guided exhibition is free to attend on a drop-in basis during Uillinn's opening hours: Monday-Saturday, 10am-4:45pm.

All are welcome to attend the exhibition launch on 12 April, 4-5:30pm, which includes a tour of the exhibition by Valerie Mulvin. There will also be a closing talk on 21 May.

Irish Architecture Foundation

About With a focus on public audiences and established in 2005, the Irish Architecture Foundation (IAF) is Ireland’s independent organisation that fosters and advances the culture and communication of architecture. Based in Dublin, but with a national remit and an international network, our purpose is to empower people to build a better world. A not-for-profit charity, the IAF is principally funded by the Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon. It is additionally funded by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, under the auspices of the National Built Heritage Services; the Office of Public Works; and Dublin City Council. Across an increasingly broad range of events, programmes, and exhibitions, the IAF partners with individuals, organisations, government agencies, education institutions and civil society groups to ensure that our work builds civic pride and action and that outcomes are impactful and transformative.
