Opening on Saturday 11 January in The Source Arts Centre, Thurles, as part of a national tour across Ireland in 2024 and 2025, The Reason of Towns is an engaging and provocative exhibition by the Irish Architecture Foundation (IAF) of the work of one of Ireland’s most renowned architects, Valerie Mulvin.

Curated, commissioned and produced by the IAF, this touring exhibition features models, drawings, texts, and a series of slides, notes, personal memorabilia, and building fragments. In addition, The Reason of Towns exhibition presents three specially commissioned films: “The Space Is the Thing” is a spatial-portrait of Clones, Youghal, Dungarvan and Templemore, describing their ‘ordinary-spectacular’ forms; “Of Pride and Place” documents ten optimistic stories of action and change by architects working in towns across Ireland; while, finally, the exhibition also presents a new interview with Valerie Mulvin by broadcaster Vincent Woods, reflecting on her work and the subject of the exhibition.

The self-guided exhibition is free to attend on a drop-in basis during The Source opening hours:
10am to 5pm on Tuesday to Friday
2pm to 5pm on Saturday

Irish Architecture Foundation

About With a focus on public audiences and established in 2005, the Irish Architecture Foundation (IAF) is Ireland’s independent organisation that fosters and advances the culture and communication of architecture. Based in Dublin, but with a national remit and an international network, our purpose is to empower people to build a better world. A not-for-profit charity, the IAF is principally funded by the Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon. It is additionally funded by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, under the auspices of the National Built Heritage Services; the Office of Public Works; and Dublin City Council. Across an increasingly broad range of events, programmes, and exhibitions, the IAF partners with individuals, organisations, government agencies, education institutions and civil society groups to ensure that our work builds civic pride and action and that outcomes are impactful and transformative.
