Join the UCD Earth Institute for a timely and thought-provoking event addressing the urgent intersection of climate action and housing delivery in Ireland. This event will explore how the construction sector can respond to the climate emergency without compromising the critical need for increased housing supply.

Richard O’Hegarty (UCD & RKD) will present research on whole life carbon analysis of the Irish residential sector, examining the embodied and operational emissions tied to current housing stock and analysing the role of modern methods of construction (MMC) in reducing carbon impacts and enabling faster construction. John McCartney (BNP Paribas) will provide insights into the current dynamics of housing output in Ireland, analysing economic and policy trends that influence market supply and demand.

Following the presentations, a panel discussion will feature expert responses from Éadaoin Ní Fhearghail of the Department of Housing, Marion Jammet of the Irish Green Building Council and Susan McGarry of Ecocem who will reflect on the policy, regulatory, and sustainability implications of decarbonising construction at scale.

The session will be chaired by Assoc Prof Oliver Kinnane, Head of School of Architecture, Planning and Environment Policy, UCD Climate Fellow and co-lead of the Built Environment theme at UCD Earth Institute, offering a platform for collaborative dialogue between academia, industry, and government on shaping a low-carbon future for Irish housing.

The seminar will feature Assoc Prof Oliver Kinnane (Head of UCD School of Architecture, Planning & Environmental Policy), Dr Richard O’Hegarty (Research Engineer at UCD and Research Lead at RKD Architects), Dr John McCartney (Director and Head of Research at BNP Paribas Real Estate Ireland), Éadaoin Ní Fhearghail (Architectural Advisor, Department of Housing, Local Government & Heritage), Marion Jammet (Director of Advocacy and Policy, Irish Green Building Council) and, Susan McGarry (Director of Public Affairs and Sustainability at Ecocem).

The event will conclude with an audience Q&A session followed by a light networking lunch at the end of the seminar.

This event is supported by the UCD Policy Interface through funding from the HEA.
